Abstract
Disulphamoyl aniline compounds of the general formula <FORM:0877056/IV (b)/1> in which R1 is halogen (e.g. Br, Cl, F) C1-C5 alkyl or alkoxy or nitro or amino and R2 is hydrogen or a C1-C5 alkyl group are made by chlorosulphonating an aniline compound of the formula <FORM:0877056/IV (b)/2> wherein R3 may be hydrogen or a C1-C6 alkanoyl group, by reacting with chlorosulphonic acid, heating the reaction mixture in the presence of a chlorinating agent containing phosphorus or sulphur, e.g. thionyl chloride, sulphonyl chloride, phosphorus trichloride or phosphorus pentachloride and treating the resulting disulphonyl chloride with ammonia. Preferably, the initial reaction with chlorosulphonic acid is carried out at 125-130 DEG C., the reaction mixture is then cooled, at least two moles of the phosphorus- or sulphur - containing chlorinating agent are added and the reaction is continued by heating below the boiling point of the chlorinating agent, quenching with water and treating the separated disulphonyl chloride with at least 4 equivalents of ammonia in a solvent such as water, methanol, benzene, isopropanol or t-butanol.
