Abstract
Easily water-soluble fluorescent compounds are obtained when a difficultly water-soluble fluorescent amine which contains in the amino group at least one hydrogen atom linked to the nitrogen atom is reacted with an aliphatic sultone containing at least 3 carbon atoms per molecule. The emission wavelength of the amines lies between 380 and 780 mm with water as a solvent. Specified sultones are propane sultone and 1,3-, 1,4- and 2,4-butane sultone. Fluorescent amines free of sulphonic or carboxylic acid groups are particularly referred to, those mentioned being of the benzthiazole, benzimidazole, benztriazole, coumarin, quinoline and pyrene series. The reaction is preferably effected at elevated temperature. The products are optical bleaching agents. In examples a mixture of 1,3- and 1,4-butane sultones is reacted with (1) 2-(41-aminophenyl)-5-methylbenzthiazole, (2)5-amino-2-phenylbenztriazole, (3) 7-amino-4-methyl-coumarin, (4) 7-ethylamino - 4 - methyl - coumarin, (5) bis-(benzimidazolyl - 2) - ethylene, (6) 2 - aminopyrene, (7) 7 - amino - 2 - hydroxylepidine, (8) the sodium salt of bis 4,41-(p-aminobenzoyl-p-aminobenzoyl) - aminostilbene - 2,21 - disulphonic acid and (9) 3-aminopyrene.
