Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula : <FORM:0850663/IV(b)/1> (wherein R and R1 are bromine, chlorine, alkyl of 1 to 3 carbon atoms or alkoxy of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, or R may additionally be an alkylmercapto group of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, R1 being in the 3- or 5-position) and acid-addition salts thereof; and the preparation thereof by reacting an appropriately disubstituted aniline with diethanolamine in presence of at least a slight excess of a mineral acid, or with an acid addition salt of a bis(haloethyl)amine. Preferably an excess of the aniline compound is employed and the reaction is carried out at elevated temperature. Examples describe the preparation of the 2 : 3-dichloro, 2 : 3-dimethyl, 3-chloro-2-methyl, 2 : 5-dimethyl, 2 : 5-dichloro, 2-methyl-5-chloro, 2-methyl-5-isopropyl, 2 : 3-dimethoxy, 5-chloro-2-isopropoxy, 5-chloro-2-ethylmercapto, 2 : 5-dimethoxy, 2 : 5-diethoxy, 5-chloro-2-methoxy and 2-methoxy-5-methyl compounds of the invention. Hydrochlorides and hydrobromides of some of the products are described and a list of further salt-forming organic and inorganic acids is also provided.
