Process for the preparation of trifluoromethyl mercaptophenols
The 4-trifluoromethyl mercaptophenol has already been used by L. M. Yagupolsky and M. S. Mareneks (see J. alla. Chem. 24, 887 [1954]) belsc. drove. According to this literature, it is obtained by diaazotizing and boiling 4-trifluoromethylmercaptoaniline.
The latter is named after F. Müller, O. Scherrer and NV.

X preferably stands for alkyl groups with 1-4 carbon atoms, halogen atoms, in particular chlorine, bromine, the nitro group and the
Hydroxyl group. is possible in the following simple and delegative way by reacting trifluoromethylsulfenyl chloride with the corresponding phenols. You can work at 0-200 C, preferably at 80-100, in the presence of Freidel-Krafts Kaalysatoren and with the addition of inert solvents.
The trifluoromethylsulfenyl chloride can easily be obtained according to C. W. Tullock (see US Pat. No. 2,884,453) from perchlomethyl mercaptan and sodium fluoride in tetramethylene sulfone and purified by distillation. lis is preferably used with a purity of 80-90%. The main impurity, bis-trifluoromethyl disulfide, does not take part in the reaction.
The trifluoromethyl mercaptophenols are especially valuable starting materials for the production of certain phosphoric acids with an insecticidal effect.
The following examples may explain the method according to the invention in more detail:
example 1
50 g (0.53 moles) of phenol are dissolved in 30 ml of chlorobenzene, and 20 g of iron (III) chloride (anhydrous, sublimed) are added. 27 g (about 0.16 moles) of about 80% trifluoromelethylsulfenyl chloride are passed into the well-stirred suspension at room temperature over a period of 31/2 hours.

The hydrogen chloride that develops is discharged through a cold trap at -78, whereby aa. 30 g of unreacted trifluoromethylksulfenyl chloride condense. To expel the chlorinated water, the reaction mixture is heated for about 1 level on the water bath in a stream of nitrogen. It is then fractionally distilled. 179 g of a fraction are obtained which is between 185 and 211 and consists in approximately equal parts of phenol and 4-trifluoromethyl mercaptophenol, plus 73 g of 4-trifluoromethyl mercaptophenol; Bp 13.5 99 -99.5, mp 58 -59 C.
