Abstract

957,802. Piezo-electric elements. BRANSON INSTRUMENTS Inc. June 10, 1960 [June 12, 1959], No. 20511/60. Heading H1E. [Also in Division H4] An ultrasonic transducer comprises two piezo-electric discs 12, 14, Fig. 3, disposed between a front member 24, Fig. 1, and a back member 20 and subjected to substantially uniform pressure (e.g. 2,000 to 5,000 lbs./sq. in.) applied by said members 20, 24. The discs are of barium zirconate titanate. Metal films 16a, 19a, 23a, 26a between the opposing faces of the discs 12, 14 and members 20, 24 are of metal not more readily oxidizable in air than silver and are such that, under the action of the applied pressure, they can flow to fill up imperfections and voids in the opposing faces. The films are of silver, gold or platinum. Front member 24 is a frusto-conical aluminium horn and back member 20 is a steel plate. A nickel disc 32 separates discs 12, 14. Screws 34 clamp the parts together. Member 20 and discs 12, 32, 14, together form a unit of “ wavelength thickness at an operating frequency of 20 kilocycles/second. Horn 24 is also of “ wavelength thickness at this frequency. Input electrical signals are applied across disc 32 and terminal 36.
