Abstract
1293670 Diaphragms; piezo-electric transducers SIEMENS AG 17 Nov 1970 [5 Dec 1969] 54534/70 Heading H4J An electro -acoustic transducer has a diaphragm 1 gripped in a region intermediate its edge and its centre, and the diaphragm 1 has a vibration node corresponding to a harmonic (other than the fundamental) of the diaphragm 1 which provides a nodal line in a part of the diaphragm remote from the region where it is gripped. The harmonic is in the useful frequency band of the diaphragm, e.g. 100 Hz to 3,500 Hz. A relatively smooth response is thereby obtained over the useful frequency band. Fig. 1 shows a microphone with a titanium diaphragm 1 carrying a layer 2 of piezoelectric ceramic or piezo-resistive material. The diaphragm 1 is gripped on opposite sides by annular extensions 6, 7 and 8, 9 of an elastic bearing 3, preferably of silicon rubber. Weakening grooves 10, 11 and 12, 13 may be provided. A metal support plate 15 has a surrounding flange 16. A centre contact 20 is disposed in an insulating body 19. The electrodes of piezoelectric layer 2 are connected by wires 21, 22 to an amplifier 23. A diode 24 is incorporated. Fig. 3 shows a diaphragm M having a piezoelectric layer P vibrating in a second harmonic mode. A nodal circle is adjacent the gripped area. The diaphragm M deforms the bearing L.
