Abstract
931,080. Diaphragms. BOLT, BERANEK & NEWMAN Inc. Jan. 8, 1960 [March 24, 1959], No. 704/60. Class 40 (4). A panel in a fluid medium has an electromechanical transducer 3, Fig. 5, coupled therewith, and comprises a pair of skins 1, 1<SP>1</SP> (see also Fig. 2) just completely sandwiching therebetween a structure 5 which has a longitudinal stiffness per unit width smaller than that of each of the skins 1, 1<SP>1</SP>. The panel also satisfies the relationship ##S/M- > C, > C, where S is the sheer stiffness of the structure 5, M is the mass per unit area of surface of the panel and C is the velocity of sound in the fluid medium. The panel is for radiating or receiving sound waves which travel as bending waves in the panel. The panel may employ a paper-honeycomb structure 5 sandwiched between aluminium foil skins 1, 1<SP>1</SP>. Forward and rearward radiation or reception is provided by suspending the panel within an opening 2 in a support 4, Fig. 5. Several such panels may be arranged side by side on a common flat support, Fig. 6, not shown, or on the surface of a conical support 4<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 7. A circular panel has a transducer 3 at its centre, Fig. 9. A diaphragm for stereophonic reproduction, Fig. 8, is arranged between two reflecting walls and has two stereophonically related transducers 3 one at each end of the diaphragm. Transducers 3 may be of the magnetomotive, magnetostrictive or piezoelectric type.
