Abstract

1,104,676. Acoustic relays; ultrasonic couplings. REALISATIONS ULTRASONIQUES. 2 July, 1965 [2 July, 1964], No. 28221/65. Headings- H3U and H4J. In order to avoid " wall-effect " echoes in a sound wave transmission system into which the sound waves are induced, e.g. by a piezo-electric transducer, the transmission system is formed by a multi-layer stack of thin plates or foils arranged so that the planes of the plates or foils are parallel to the direction of propagation of the waves, i.e. the transducer is in contact with the edges of the plates or-foils at one side of the stack, the thickness of each plate or foil being less than the wavelength of the sound. As shown in Fig. 10 a transducer 10 is connected to one side of a stack of foils 5 bent through 90 degrees, the foils being stuck together at their ends 6, 7 and assembled between plates 8, 9 to obtain rigidity. In a modification (Fig. 11, not shown) the foils (11) comprise a wedgeshaped assembly acting as an energy concentrator. In another modification (Figs. 12, 13, not shown) the foils (15) form an acoustic-prism.
