Abstract

957,532. Treating tobacco. BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO CO. Ltd. Oct. 16, 1962 [Nov. 23, 1961], No. 41970/61. Heading A2C. [Also in Division F4] A method of treating cut tobacco for drying and improving its filling power comprises treating the tobacco with hot drying air which is also the conveying medium, the hot air containing not less than 1 part, by weight, of moisture to 10 parts of dry air. Cut tobacco to be dried is carried through drying chambers 6 of the type described in Specification 875,684 by a current of hot air containing a high proportion viz. not less than 10% of water vapour, the air being recirculated continuously in a substantially closed system. The water vapour content of the air is regulated by bleeding off at 14 a small amount of air and admitting make-up air through 16 and additional steam or water vapour at 21. Droplets of moisture in the air are removed by baffles-a chamber 19 and a temperature sensing element 21 beyond the chamber 19 is connected to a damper 17 in the duct 16 to control automatically the quantity of air introduced into the system. The temperature of the hot drying and carrying air is sensed by an element 26 after leaving a separator 7 for further heating, if necessary, from whence the tobacco passes to a cooler 10, the element being connected to a controller 26a which controls a valve 22 to direct proportions of air from the chamber 19 either to a heater 23 or by-pass duct 24.
