Abstract
957,482. Contact condensers. LICENCIA TALALMANYOKAT ERTEKESITO VALLALAT. Aug. 21, 1961 [Aug. 26, 1960], No. 30043/61. Heading BIB. In a contact condenser, for use with large steam turbines, the cooling water is injected in the form of flat, vertical sheets of water, the surfaces of which are approximately parallel to the flow of steam, so that a large surface area of water is brought in contact with the steam without substantially impeding the flow of steam. Steam entering the condenser via pipe 1, Fig. 1, and duct 2 is condensed by the flat vertical sheets 13 of cooling water emanating from nozzles 10 placed in the walls 9 of the chambers 4 and 4a, each chamber being supplied with cooling water through an inlet 5. These flat sheets of cooling water are produced by setting the nozzles 10 at an inclined angle (Fig. 4) to the walls 9 so that the jets of water strike the deflector plates 11 at a shallow angle. The nozzles 10 are so arranged in the walls 9 as to provide the maximum number of sheets of water 13 parallel to one another in the condenser, Fig. 3. Each sheet of water traversing the spaces between the chambers 4 and 4a is prevented from striking a wall 9 by the corres-, ponding guard wall 14, thus ensuring that the cooling water in chambers 4 and 4a is not preheated before being injected into the condenser 3. Arrangements may be made to evacuate the space between walls 9 and 14, so as to reduce heat transfer from walls 14 to walls 9 to a minimum. The heated water that strikes walls 14 flows into sump 7, and the condensate thus obtained is removed via outlet 8. Another method of obtaining a flat turbulent sheet of cooling water, Figs. 7 and 8, comprises arranging the nozzles 12 in pairs so that the water issuing from one nozzle immediately strikes the water issuing from the other nozzle at an acute angle, thus producing a combined stream of water in the form of a sheet 13. Two modifications of the contact condenser are also described.
