Abstract

[Also in Division B8] A brake device for protecting a hand-operated ratchet hoist against overload comprises a resilient sleeve 10, Fig. 1, which is compressed axially by excessive loads on the axially loaded slipping clutch and brake mechanism 5, 6, 7, of the ratchet operated nut 2 and is forced radially to frictionally lock the pinion drive shaft 4 within the housing 13. In the example, the resilient split sleeve 10 is loosely mounted in a recess 14 of the housing 13 and is keyed for rotation with the shaft 4 by a pin 11. The tapered ends of the sleeve 10 are engaged by correspondingly tapered faces of a disc 8 backing the friction disc 6 and a ring wedge 12 seated against a collar 15 of the shaft 4. The disc 8 and sleeve 10 are loosely pinned at 9, 11 for rotation with the shaft 4. Under excessive load the sleeve expands radially into frictional contact with the walls of the recess 14. In a modification, the sleeve may be pinned in the recess 14 and forced radially inwardly into frictional contact with the shaft 4.
