Abstract

878,538. Disc brakes. CHIOLERIO, F. March 10, 1960 [March 25, 1959], No. 8537/60. Class 103 (1). An automatic device has a disc brake for braking and locking a driven shaft 2 on stopping of a driving shaft 1, is wholly mechanical and comprises a backlash connection between shafts 1 and 2 permitting limited angular displacement of shaft 1 from its inoperative position before it drives shaft 2, this angular displacement being utilized for releasing and applying the brake on starting and stopping of shaft 1. A square section bush 7 on shaft 2 surrounds with clearance the square section end 1<SP>1</SP> of shaft 1, the end 1<SP>1</SP> and shaft 2 having co-operating truncated pyramidal surfaces 5, 6. Three springs 11 act on a pressure plate 4<SP>1</SP> to engage discs 9, keyed to bush 7, with discs 4 keyed to a fixed housing 3, the plate 4<SP>1</SP> being mounted by a bearing 15 on shaft 2. With shaft 1 stopped, the surfaces 5, 6 mate and springs 11 apply the brake to hold shaft 2 stationary. On rotation of shaft 1, the shaft 2 is initially moved axially by the camming of surfaces 5, 6 to move plate 4<SP>1</SP> through shaft collar 2<SP>1</SP> and bearing 15 to release the brake, the shaft end 1<SP>1</SP> then engaging bush 7, Fig. 3, to drive shaft 2. On stopping of shaft 1, the shaft 2 rotates until faces 5, 6 mate when springs 11 re-apply the brake to stop shaft 2.
