[Also in Groups XXIV and XXXIV] A mechanical press has a driving shaft 24 provided with a brake disc 26 located between two brake plates 28, 30 carried by a rotatable brake housing 14. One brake plate 30 is movable to clamp the disc between the plates and prevent the shaft from moving relatively to the brake housing. This is provided with means for stopping its rotation and with means for rotating it and so rotating the shaft when it is desired to inch the press. The shaft is normally driven from its main source of power through a clutch which is opened at the same time as the brake is applied. In the form shown, a worm wheel 16, attached to the brake housing, is rotated by a worm 36, driven by an independent motor on the press frame. The drive shaft 24 of the press, clutched by the brake to the brake housing, thus rotates and adjusts the position of the press slide accurately, because of the small pitch of the worm. In the normal operation of the press the independent motor is stopped and may be braked and so prevents the housing from rotating. The plate 30 is urged towards the disc 26 by springs 32 and is pulled in the opposite direction, to release the brake, by rods 39 when fluid under pressure, supplied to an annular space 47, forces the plate 48 outwardly. The bearing 23 supports the drive shaft and the machine is air-cooled through openings 29, 31 and 33.
