In a machine for washing continuous lengths of textile materials, e.g. cotton towelling, wherein the soiled material 7 (see unit No. 1 Fig. 2) is presoaked in a reception tank 4 by cleaning fluid from a valve controlled pipe 18 and then passes to an array of squeeze rolls 2 and outrigger rolls 3 where it is sprayed with cleaning fluid from jets formed in a tube 16, a control tank 11 is provided which is maintained at a constant level by a supply pipe 13 and from which liquid is pumped (a) to the jets in ring 16, (b) to the pipe 18 feeding tank 4 and (c) to a discharge pipe. In the form shown, in which four of the units described above are placed consecutively with a rinsing device No. 5 at their delivery end, the cleaning liquid for the four washing units (the centre two being omitted from the Figure) is introduced by supply pipe 13 in unit No. 4 and subsequently passes from the discharge tube of each unit to the supply tube 13 of the preceding unit until at unit No. 1 the liquid is finally discharged. The rinsing unit No. 5 is not in circuit with the cleaning units and differs from them in that the control tank 11 is filled only from the overflow from the reception tank 4 and the discharge liquid is fed to a stock tank since it contains alkalis or the like rinsed from the material. In the form shown, the material is treated in rope form, the reception tank 4 is J-shaped, ball valves 14 are provided on the ends of supply pipes 13 and the tanks 11 are heated by steam from a pipe 20.
