Abstract

Metal finishing of articles by immersion in liquids, e.g barrel finishing, in an installation wherein the articles are processed successively through a series of tanks provided with an overhead gantry device for transferring the articles from tank to tank. A barrel finishing installation comprises a row of tanks each adapted to receive a barrel assembly including a rotatable barrel containing articles, a carriage movable along an overhead rail structure fitted with a <PICT:0956160/C3/1> hoist actuating a lifting device, with means for releasably engaging a barrel assembly for raising and lowering said assembly by operation of the hoist. Article-supporting means 2 removably positioned in each tank 1, e.g. removable barrels, are transferred from tank to tank by an overhead travelling carriage 5 moving on a rail structure 4 supported above and extending along the row of said tanks. The carriage is equipped with a hoist 13 and a lifting device 12 actuated by said hoist for releasably engaging the article-supporting means 2 to raise, transfer and lower said support means by operation of said hoist. The lifting device comprises telescopic members 17 supported from the overhead carriage 5, and a carrier bar 15 (not shown) supported by said members, and adapted to be raised and lowered by the hoist with hook members 33 (not shown) supported by the carrier bar for engagement with the article-supporting means: the carrier bar is adapted for limited independent vertical movement with respect to the telescopic members ; and means are provided for latching the said telescopic lifting device in the raised position to permit the article-supporting means to be lowered free from engagement with the telescopic members. When in the fully lowered position the aforementioned hook members 33 (not shown) are free from contact with the support means which allows the lifting device to be traversed along the row of tanks while in the lowered position. Each tank is provided with guides for engaging rollers attached to the support yoke for correct location of the support means within a tank. In the installation described, for barrel finishing, each article-supporting means comprises a barrel assembly which is rotatably supported with a drive means for rotating the barrel when the assembly is positioned in a tank.
