Apparatus for handling coils of strip or similar material in which the coils are supported on a reel includes a carriage movable towards or away from the reel, an elevator mechanism mounted on the carriage, cradle means mounted on the elevator for supporting the coil in either vertical axis or horizontal axis position and for moving the coil between these positions, means for moving the elevator vertically relatively to the carriage, and means for actuating the cradle to cause the coil to assume either of said positions. As shown in Fig. 1, a coil of steel strip 2 is wound on a reel 1 which is of the type equipped with means for gripping the inner end of the strip and is also collapsable to a reduced diameter so that the coil may be removed from the unsupported end of the reel 1. The reel 1 is supported in a housing 3 and is driven through suitable gearing from a motor 4. A carriage C is mounted by rollers 12 on I-beams 9 in a pit for movement towards and away from the reel. The carriage C carries an elevator (not shown) operated by a hydraulic ram 21 on the carriage C and guided by a member 26 sliding in apertures in the carriage to raise and lower a cradle A comprising limbs 39 and 40 mounted in trunnions 38. The limb 39 carries' rollers 41 in trough formation to receive the coil which is pushed into engagement with the limb 40 by a member 5 on the coil winding-machine. The cradle A may be turned about the trunnions 38 by a rack 47 engaging a toothed section 46 and operated by a hydraulic ram 51 on the elevator. The carriage may be moved towards and from the machine on its rollers 12 by a hydraulic ram 20. To remove a coil from the reel 1, the carriage is moved up to the machine with the cradle A in the position shown, the elevator is raised to bring the rollers 41 into engagement with the coil which is then pushed against the limb 40 by the member 5, the carriage is backed from the machine carrying the coil, and the cradle is turned so that the axis of the coil is vertical. The limb 40 is provided with slots 43 for the entry of the forks of a lifting truck. Means 30, 31 limit upward movement of'the elevator, and stops 44, 45, 441, 45<SP>1</SP> limit the rotation of the cradle A. The controls may be interlocked to prevent an incorrect sequence of operations. The device may also be used to place a coil on the reel. Pressure fluid for operating the apparatus is supplied by a motor 54 and pump 57.
