Abstract

978,702. Loading and unloading pallets; load-handling devices. H. SCHAEFER. Feb. 16, 1962 [Feb. 25, 1961], No. 6196/62. Headings B8C and B8H. Bottle crates in stacks are loaded on or unloaded from pallets by means of a support frame 4, mounted on a trolley 3, the frame 4 carrying a member 7 having support arms or prongs 18. The member 7 is connected to the frame 4 by articulated linkage 5, 6, and may be raised or lowered relative to the frame by means of a ram 14. Stacked crates are delivered on a roller way 16; the trolley 3 is advanced to engage the lowermost crate of the stack by the prongs 18; the ram 14 is operated to lift the stack; the trolley is advanced towards a pallet 20 on a track 19; the cylinder 14 lowers the stack; and the trolley 3 returns, each step being controlled automatically by mechanical, optical or electric sensing means. A stop is used to hold back subsequent crates on the roller way 16 during the operation. Modifications.-The support arm may swivel and the articulated linkage be arranged to tilt the member 7 in its raised position, Fig. 3 (not shown). The lifting device may have hooks arranged one above the other on the member 7 which engage in openings in the sides of the crates, a pronged device, as in Fig. 1, being carried on the opposite side of the support arm, Fig. 4 (not shown). Three stacks side by side may be lifted together, Fig. 5 (not shown). The hooks may be of V-shape, Fig. 6 (not shown). Two or more stacks of crates may be moved from opposite directions, Fig. 8 (not shown) by means of two lifting mechanisms arranged opposite one another. As shown in Fig. 9, three crank drives 44, 51 and 57 may be used to effect horizontal and vertical movement of the lifting mechanism. A bolt 50 is secured to an endless chain 51 which is actuated so that the bolt 50 travels to either of two positions 50<SP>1</SP> or 5011 thereby moving in a vertical guide 49 and causing the trolley 3 to travel towards the crate stack. The crank drive 44 moves a carriage 42 for the support arm 4<SP>1</SP>, and the drive 57 raises the member 7. A further guide wall may be mounted on the support wall by means of parallelogram linkage, Fig. 10 (not shown).
