Abstract

956,146. Fibre feeding apparatus. COTTON, SILK & MAN-MADE FIBRES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. March 16,1961 [Dec. 17,1959], No. 42930/59. Heading D1N. [Also in Division G3] In a scutcher or like machine in which a fibrous web of variable thickness longitudinally and laterally is subjected to treatment that modifies its weight per unit length and in which the web is passed between a roller and a series of detectors disposed axially of the roller to initiate compensating adjustments to the machine to preserve an even feed of material, a reaction member is interposed in such manner that the roller and reaction member are urged towards each other. The loading of the detectors is preferably by helical springs with a stiffness so chosen that the relationship between weight per unit length and the thickness of the material will be substantially linear over a given working range. Matching springs may be used to urge together the roller and reaction member. Detectors B are pressed against a fibrous web passing beneath a roller A by springs S1 carried by the reaction member C that may be a sliding or a pivoted plate urged towards the roller A by matching springs S2. Drive to the roller A may be by a variable speed motor I controlled by an open loop system comprising a transducer F influenced by member C, a function generator G and an amplifier H. In another embodiment, the signal from the amplifier controls a servomotor that by mechanical means removes excess material from the web. A further embodiment has a motor operating an excess material remover switched on when the web deviates from a desired thickness. Other forms of detectors than those shown may be used, e.g. the detectors may be in the form of leaf springs and the helical springs be dispensed with. According to the Provisional Specification instead of pivoted detectors, detectors journalled in holes in the reaction member and provided with coaxial springs may be used.
