Abstract

In drawing synthetic filaments by a draw-twister in which units comprising a heated feed roll, a draw roll and a packaging-means at a number of positions are driven from a common source of power, these units are made to rotate slowly during stringing-up to obviate breakages on starting by reducing the time during which the filaments are allowed to dwell on the heated surfaces during the stringing-up operation. To this end a secondary, smaller, source of power is connected by a free-wheel coupling to the gearing or other transmission by which the units at each position are driven by a primary power source. During stringing-up, the units are driven at speeds between 1/100 th and 1/1000 th of the normal speed; the units may additionally comprise a heating plate and the traveller ring of the packaging means may be magnetized; and the filaments may be of polyesters and copolyesters (e.g. those of terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol or 1, 4-cyclohexane dimethanol) polyamides and polyolefines such as stereo-regular polypropylene including isotactic polypropylene. It is stated that the process is applicable to other forms of draw twisters than those using a heated feed roll.
