Abstract

Polyethylene terephthalate monofils for use as bristles are given an improved flexibility, strength, curl-resistance and recovery from bending, by drawing them at 55-180 DEG C. to a total draw ratio of 4.6 : 1 to 5.2 : 1, then heating to effect a reduction in length of 5 per cent to 10 per cent and finally heating at 150-250 DEG C. while they are held to prevent shrinkage. The polyester preferably has an intrinsic viscosity (as defined) of at least 0.35. The drawing operation may be effected in two stages, the first being effected at 55-80 DEG C., and the second at 80-180 DEG C. Examples describe the two-stage drawing operation followed by heating in steam at 100 DEG C. to effect the shrinkage and then, while reeled to prevent shrinkage, by heating in mineral oil or air at 180 DEG or 190 DEG C.
