Abstract

Packing material having the qualities of stiffness and resistance to humidity and warmth is obtained by cutting up filaments, threads, yarns or woven fabrics composed of highly polymeric linear esters produced by heating one or more glycols of the series HO(CH2)nOH, where n is greater than 1 but not exceeding 10, with terephthalic acid or an acid-forming derivative thereof; the preferred ester being polyethylene terephthalate. The packing can be used for heat or sound insulation or as a filling for upholstered or padded articles. Yarns for subsequent cutting may be made by twisting continuous filaments or by spinning staple fibres produced from short lengths of crimped filament.
