Abstract

A core yarn formed by conventional twisting methods comprises a core of synthetic filaments (e.g. polyester, polyamide, acrylic etc) around which are twisted natural or synthetic fibres (e.g. cotton, wool, ramie, viscose. The core yarn is false twisted pref. whilst being stretched (e.g. 2% elongation) to produce a texuration of pref. 220-250 on the Kochlin scale, to increase the elasticity of the core yarn. Pref. the textured core yarn is heat treated and allowed to contract by about 15% before being taken-up. The core yarn has a high bulk and is used to produce a woven or knitted fabric which has good touch characteristics; good thermal insulation; is dimensionally stable; less porous to air; and has a reduced tendency to shrink.
