Abstract

955,215. Joint-making packing. McCORD CORPORATION. May 14, 1962 [Oct. 23, 1961], No. 18482/62. Heading F2B. [Also in Division B5] A cylinder head gasket comprises an embossed metal sheet 10 sandwiched between and bonded to two sheets 12, 14 of heat-resistant composition of compressed chrysotile asbestos fibre and nitrile type synthetic rubber, the cylinder openings 16 each being surrounded by a metal grommet 22 having flanges 24, 26 overlapping the outer faces of the sheets 12, 14. The grommets may be interconnected by strips 28 and the grommets and the metal sheet 10 may be of copper or brass or, preferably, of cold rolled or stainless steel. The metal sheet may be embossed with small dimples 30, Fig. 5. Adhesive is applied to both faces of the sheet 10 and may also be applied to one surface of each of the sheets 12 and 14. The sheets are then stuck together and calendered by passing them between pressure rolls. The overall thickness of the finished gasket is substantially less than the sum of the original thicknesses of the three sheets 10, 12 and 14. The composition of the sheets 12 and 14 is preferably approximately 84% chrysotile asbestos fibres and 16% nitrile synthetic rubber.
