Abstract

953,915. Fuel injection systems. F. A. CLARKE, and T. BROOKE. March 7, 1961 [Dec. 7, 1959], No. 41582/59. Heading FIB. A fuel injection system comprises a pump in communication with a source of fuel means connecting the pump to the actuating mechanism of the inlet valve or to the inlet valve whereby the pump is operated in response to the opening of the inlet valve to eject fuel into the airstream passing through the inlet valve or into the combustion space of the engine and means to meter the quantity of fuel ejected by the pump. As shown upon actuation of each diaphragm 6 by movement of the pushrod and valve rocker to open the inlet valve fuel in the pump chamber 3 is forced into the balance pipe 10 and is then distributed between the fuel conduit 11 and nozzle 12 connected thereto and the spill-off conduit 13 according to the setting of the control valve 15. If the control valve 15 is partly open some fuel will flow along the conduit 11 and some along the spill-off conduit 13. In this manner the quantity of fuel injected into the inlet manifolds is controlled .The control valve 15 is responsive to the air pressure in the inlet duct the chamber 21 being in communication with the air inlet duct on the inlet side of a butterfly control valve and the chamber 30 being in communication with the air inlet duct on the engine side of the butterfly valve. On opening of the butterfly valve the bobbin 19 is moved towards the end 17 of the valve housing resulting in fuel being forced through the pipe line 22 into the air inlet duct. In a modification the fuel supply conduit may be coupled to only one of the pump chambers 3 of each pair and the spill-off conduits 13 may be coupled to the other pump chambers of each pair rather than to the balance pipes 10, the two spill-off conduits 13 being joined into a single main spill-off conduit provided with a control valve.
