Abstract

953,777. Laminates and laminating. METAL SKIN CORP. June 26, 1962, No. 24425/62. Drawings to Specification. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B8] Sheet metal is given a protective coating which will adhere sufficiently to permit handling but is easily removed, by applying to its surface, under pressure, a flexible sheet composed of or impregnated with synthetic resinous material, e.g. polyvinylidene, this sheet being electrostatically charged by friction either before, during, or after application to cause adherence to the metal. If the surface of the metal does not have a mirror finish or if it is coated with a non-metal it is desirable to heat the flexible sheet to a temperature, e.g. between 125‹ and 165‹ F., at which it will become sufficiently softened to conform to the metallic surface irregularities without suffering damage. Preferably the heating is effected by heating the metal sheet at the point of application of the flexible sheet, a radiant gas burner being used. Continuous sheet metal may be carried over a series of rollers (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) and polyvinylidene sheet fed from a roll supported above the metal and pressed on to it by a pressureloaded roller, typical pressures being 40-80 pounds per square inch. Alternatively a pair of rollers may be carried in a frame (Fig. 3-6, not shown), supported one above the other and in contact so that sheet material can be put through like clothes through a wringer. The roll of plastic sheet is supported above these rollers and contacts the upper one so that when one roller is driven all turn together, thus feeding the plastic sheet on to a metal sheet passed between the rollers and pressing it into contact therewith. The upper roller is of conductive rubber. Nozzles may be provided to spray talc on to the upper surface of the plastic so that it does not adhere to the underside of the metal sheet when the protected sheet is wound into a roll for storage. Examples of pressures and temperatures used with various metal sheets are given. The protective film may be translucent or transparent to permit inspection of the protected surface or it may be of paper impregnated with liquid vinylidene chloride which is then polymerized; indicia may be printed thereon. The sheet metal may, e.g., be aluminium, chrome or nickel-plated steel, stainless steel, brass, or copper and may be coated with epoxy, alkyl or vinyl resins, enamel or other finish.
