1,221,481. Laminating apparatus and process. SEKISUI SPONGE KOGYO K.K. 21 May, 1968 [21 June, 1967; 4 July, 1967], No. 24238/68. Heading B5N. Foamed thermoplastic resin particles, e.g. of either polymers or co-polymers of vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, ethylene, propylene, styrene or methyl methacrylate, are supplied from a hopper 1, 2 and delivery means 4 to the space between two facing webs 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, the assembly being firstly heated, but not pressed, between two endless belts 8, 8<SP>1</SP> by high frequency means, secondly dried by hot air blown through conduit 16, thirdly pressed at the station 20, where the foamed particles combine to form a layer, and fourthly cooled by cooling air as the resulting laminate passes between pairs of rolls 25, 251. Webs 5, 5<SP>1</SP> which may be of paper, regenerated cellulose, a thermoplastic film, or cloth are coated with adhesive, e.g. polyvinyl acetate emulsion, by rolls 6, 6<SP>1</SP> respectively. The foamed particles may be treated with a wetting agent supplied from a tank 3. Endless belt 8 is of metal, e.g. stainless steel, and is earthed through carbon brushes 11 and acts as one electrode in the high frequency heating means. The other electrode is either fixed or is in the form of a small endless belt, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). In both cases, this second electrode is in contact with belt 8<SP>1</SP>, which may be of natural, butyl or isoprene gum reinforced with fibres of polyethylene terephthalate or glass. Rolls 9, 9<SP>1</SP>, 10, 10<SP>1</SP> which support the endless belts may be heated by steam or hot air. The pressing station 20 may comprise pairs of rolls 17, 18 as shown or two endless, heated metallic belts, Figs. 6 and 8 (not shown).
