Abstract

1,051,398. Foamed sheets. AMERICAN EXCELSIOR CORPORATION Nov. 17, 1965 [Jan. 12, 1965], No. 48841/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C3] An apparatus for foaming a thermoplastic sheet comprises an enclosing chamber, means for conducting a thermoplastic foamable sheet along a path through the chamber, means for providing a heated sheet-contacting atmosphere in the said chamber, and a heated surface or surfaces with which the sheet is brought into contact, the said heated atmosphere and the surface or surfaces co-operating to heat the sheet to a plastic temperature and cause it to foam. The foamed sheet may additionally be passed through embossed rollers on leaving the chamber. The Figure shows suitable apparatus, wherein 10 represents the foamable thermoplastic sheet, 11 is the enclosing chamber, 16 are nozzles providing steam, 15, as the heated sheet-contacting atmosphere and 14 represents rollers acting as heated sheet-contacting surfaces. The foamed sheet 20 is dried by the hot air plenum 21 and 22 and may subsequently be embossed by rollers 23.
