Abstract

883,514. Laminates. TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE CO. Ltd. Dec. 3, 1957 [Oct. 26, 1956], No. 32777/56. Class 140. A laminate comprises two layers of polythene, polyvinyl chloride, or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with another copolymerizable monomer, and an intermediate layer of openmesh fabric of synthetic or artificial fibres such as nylon or polyethylene terephthalate, the outer layers being fused together, without the use of an additional bonding agent, through the interstices of the fabric. Two or more such laminates may be bonded together by an additional film or films of thermoplastic material, and the weave of the fabrics in the constituent layers may be at an angle to one another. In apparatus for making the laminates a web 1 of polythene &c. drawn from a roll 2 passes around tension rollers 3, 4, is bonded by roller 5 to an open-mesh nylon &c. fabric 6 drawn from a roll 7, and is laminated between rollers 8, 9 to polythene &c extruder from a nozzle 10, the finished laminate being drawn off around a roller 12. The roller 8 may be faced with resilient material such as neoprene and may be cooled by water in a trough 13, excess being removed by roller 14. The roller 9 has a chrome or other hard surface and may also be water-cooled. In laminating nylon fabric between J.N.C. films the fabric and one film may be fed together to pressure rollers to where the other film, preheated by a hot roller, infra-red radiation or a hot-air jet, may also be fed. The products incorporate flame-retarding agents and may be used for protecting clothing, linings for tanks, electrical insulation, irrigation channel linings, as a horticultural glass substitute or a damp-course layer, or for general decorative purposes. The Provisional Specification refers to open-mesh glass fibre fabric laminated between layers of P.V.C.
