Abstract

820,375. Laminating; coating webs. TOSCONY FABRICS Inc. June 15, 1956 [June 16, 1955], No. 18621/56. Class 140. [Also in Group XVI] A laminated sheet material is formed by applying a plastic cement in deposits spaced uniformly over and across the surface of a material, applying a sheet of backing material to the cemented surface of the first material, when the cement is still in the form of spaced deposits thereon, and advancing the plied material whilst applying pressure thereto to coalesce and heat thereto to set the deposits. As shown, a web of material unwound from a roll, 31 passes around a spreader roll 34 and through the nip between a resilient, e.g. rubber-covered, roll 17 and an adjustably mounted roller 10, the surface of which, having numerous small cavities, picks up adhesive from a trough between a blade 25 and the roller and applies it in spaced deposits on the material. The adhesive coated material then passes around a spreader roll 36 together with a backing web from a roll 37 and the resulting composite web, in which the two layers are united by the partly coalesced deposits of adhesive, is led around a heated drum 42 to set the adhesive, being pressed thereon by an adjustably mounted roller 52 which causes the adhesive to spread into a continuous film. The laminated web, after passing between the drum and an adjustably mounted pressure roller 63 is drawn from the drum between a cooled roller 69 and roller 70, and passes around further cooling drums 78-80 before being wound up at 72. A layer 61 of transparent polyester resin from roll 60 may be pressed on to the drum 42 by roller 56 before the composite web is applied to the drum. It becomes united with the composite web and its surface may be modified by forming roller 69 with a matted or embossed surface. The material on roll 31 may be paper, sheet PVC or similar plastic, or paper having on at least one face thereof a layer of plastic material such as vinyl plastic, the surface of the paper adjacent to the plastic layer being either coated or uncoated and printed or unprinted, the opposite face being plain, resin impregnated, or adhesive coated. Fabric may also be used, in which case the face of the fabric abutting on to the plastic layer would be coated with an additional layer of the cement.
