Abstract

1378638 Pile fabrics IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Nov 1971 [20 Nov 1970 (2) 24 Dec 1970 (2)] 55241/70 55242/70 61325/70 and 61326/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division Dl] A pile fabric is made by interposing a heat softenable composition 2 between a foundation layer 1 and a heated roller 3, holding the composition 2 against the layer 1 so that they bond together and the composition adheres to the roller 3, parting the layer 1 and composition 2 from the roller 3 so that filaments are drawn from the composition and hardening the filaments by means of a cooling fluid 5. The composition 2 may be coloured or patterned by using a printed monolayer of film or by using an appropriately coloured multilayer film. The composition may be preheated or supplied from an extruder rather than as a film (Figure 2, not shown) or it may be supplied in powder or granule form, in the form of a woven fabric or in a cellular or foamed form. The foundation layer 1 and composition 2 may be held against the heated roller 3 by a roll 4 or by resilient means, i.e. a resilient coated roller or the foundation layer: 1 itself may form the resilient means. The cooling of the filaments may be varied across the width of the fabric to affect the curliness of the filaments or to provide filaments of differing heights. The cooling may be on either side of the pile fabric. To produce areas of the fabric with patterned effect, e.g. no filaments, areas of the heated roller may be rendered non-adhesive, embossed so that the composition does not contact-these areas or a stencil may be interposed between the composition and the heated roller. To facilitate parting of the composition from the heated roller a cooled rod 9 may be provided (Fig. 4). The composition may be pressed through a porous or perforated web, which may be the foundation layer, into contact with the heated roller.
