Abstract
726,949. Compound sheet materials. HUNT, P. J. Aug. 4, 1953 [Aug. 5, 1952; Jan. 19, 1953], Nos. 19707/52 and 1486/53. Class 140. Laminated sheet material suitable for packaging is made by feeding webs 1 and 2 of paper, cardboard, fabric, or metal foil into the nip of rollers 3, 4 so as to sandwich between them a film of polythene extruded from a die 6, the webs travelling at a rate above the extrusion rate of the film, one or both webs being preheated, e.g. by heaters 5, and the laminated web 8 being cooled on emerging from the nip, e.g. by contact with roller 4, which may be water-cooled. Instead of using heaters 5, roller 3 may be heated. The laminated web emerging from the nip may alternatively be cooled by contact with a stationary convex surface. Roller 3 may be covered with neoprene and roller 4 may be of steel.
