Abstract

A wood veneer comprises on one surface a film of material which is capable of being rendered adhesive by the application of heat so that the veneer may be firmly adhered to another article by the adhesive. The veneer may be in the form of a strip for applying to the edge of an article and stored in a roll on a spool and the film of material may consist of ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer resin containing rosin or rosin ester. The strip may be several hundred feet long and consist of a number of pieces, the ends of which are formed with fingers, the fingers of adjacent pieces interdigitating and being secured together by an adhesive such as urea adhesive. The film of material is supplied to the strip in apparatus having a pair of rolls 19, 20, roll 19 having a part immersed in a bath of the melted material and roll 20 being cooled by a sponge 24. As roll 19 rotates, a knife 25 controls the thickness of the film of material applied to the veneer which is cooled by roller 20, further rollers 21, 22, one or both of which are cooled, cooling the material so that the veneer can be wound into a reel 2 without the layers sticking together. A length of the veneer may be cut from the reel and placed around the edge of a board, an electric iron being used to press the veneer against the edge and heat the material so that it adheres the veneer to the edge.
