1,159,114. Plastics/wood laminate. HARRIS LEBUS Ltd. 19 Jan., 1967 [24 Jan., 1966], No. 3146/66. Heading B5N. A sheet of wood has a transparent flexible sheet of thermoplastic material stuck to its surface by means of a transparent adhesive, the transparent sheet bearing some at least of the grain pattern of wood of a different species from that of the wooden sheet so that this pattern is superimposed on the natural grain pattern and surface texture of the wooden sheet which are visible through the transparent sheet. In the described method of producing the sheets, plywood sheets 1 fed by conveyers 2 and 8 are coated with a liquid adhesive 7, e.g." Aeronal ", Registered Trade Mark, by a roller 4. A transparent P.V.C. film 14, which has a wood grain printed on its undersurface and which has been softened by a radiant heater 19 is pressed by a squeezer roller 10 against the adhesive coated surface of the plywood sheets, the film 14 being subsequently severed between the sheets. To simulate a darker wood than that of the wooden sheet, the wooden sheet may be stained or the adhesive or transparent sheet may be coloured. To provide a patterned sheet the surface of he wooden sheet may comprise pieces of wood of more than one species joined together, or the surface may be stained only in parts, or in more than one colour.
