946,221. Pictures; artists' boards. A. A. GAFFREY & SONS Ltd. Jan. 27, 1961 [Jan. 27, 1960], No 2947/60. Headings B6P and B6X. An artists' board comprises a rigid baseboard 2, e.g. of thick cardboard, a thin surface layer 1 of synthetic plastic material and a sheet of relatively soft material 3 interposed between the surface layer and the baseboard, the surface layer having areas defined by shallow grooves 4 and the areas being marked with a code to indicate what colour is to be applied in each area. The grooves 4 are formed in the layer 1, before it is united with the other elements of the board, by a relief die which is applied to the layer together with heat. The material 3 is compressed before the layer 1 is secured by marginal portions 6 to the baseboard 2 so that the layer 1 is kept taut.
