975,905. Laminates and laminating. CONTINENTAL GUMMI-WERKE A.G. Feb. 27, 1961 [June 15, 1960], No. 35075/62. Divided out of 975,904. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D1] Apparatus employed for applying continuous strips 3 of cellular plastics or other material, e.g. of polyurethane, a polyether, or foamed rubber or synthetic rubber, to a fabric web comprises a table or rollers,. Fig. 4, over which the fabric web 1 is passed, a knife blade 5 constructed to spread strips of PVC paste or other adhesive 6 on the web and a roller 8 for pressing the parallel strips 3 thereon. The laminated product is passed through a heating chamber, to cure the adhesive, and rolled up. The laminate may be covered with a layer 11, Fig. 3, of PVC or other plastics material which may be embossed and may be sealed to the base web 1 by electrically heated rollers 12. The web 1 may be of open weave to permit penetration of the adhesive to its underside, and the strips of adhesive may be applied between, and overlapping the edges of the cellular strips 3, thus leaving uncoated centre strips beneath the latter for the passage of air. To permit strip coating the knife 5 is provided with rearwardly projecting partitions 5a forming pockets for the adhesive 6. The cellular strips may be supplied from a single wide roll, the strips being formed by slitting the web and being spaced immediately before application to the fabric base. The product may be used for cushion covers or upholstery. The layer 11 may be replaced by a PVC coating over the whole or parts of the surface.
