Abstract

706,109. Compound sheet materials. WALLINGTON, WESTON & CO., Ltd. May 23,1952 [Feb. 23, 1951], No. 4521/51. Class 140 Compound sheet material suitable for upholstery is made by assembling the material which is to form the padding and which comprises polyvinyl chloride or rubber between a backing sheet and a cover sheet of polyvinyl chloride, and subjecting the assemblage to heat and to pressure at localized areas so as to cause the polyvinyl chloride cover sheet to be bonded to the backing at those areas. The padding layer may comprise a number of parallel strips or a sheet which varies in thickness, and may contain a blowing agent, e.g. ammonium carbonate or an organic nitrogen-releasing compound. The heating may be by high frequency electric field between a metal plate on which the layers are assembled and a number of parallel metal presser bars. The backing may be cardboard, woven fabric such as canvas, or wood veneer.
