Abstract

<PICT:1069132/C6-C7/1> The lining of an electrolytic diaphragm cell of the alkali chlorine type, comprises a layer of organic sealant 13 applied to the surface 14 to be protected, a further layer of porous fibrous material 12 adhered to the sealant, and a further layer of organic sealant 11 adhered to the fibrous layer 12. The porous fibrous material is inert with regards the brine solutions used in the cells and in the preferred form comprises a sheet of asbestos. Other suitable fibrous materials are nylon and foamed glass. The organic sealant may be bitumous sealant, such as an epoxy resincoal tar mixture, a polyester resin or an epoxy resin. In preparing the bottom of an electrolytic cell, two layers of the organic sealant are placed thereon, the first layer being permitted to dry completely before the second layer is superimposed on the first. Before completion of the drying of the second layer, the fibrous material layer is placed thereon with sufficient pressure to assure complete adherance of the layer to the sealant and that all the air under the fibrous material is eliminated. The fibrous layer is then coated with the further layer of organic sealant.
