Abstract

952,442. Toothed gearing; ratchet gearing. UNITED STATES TIME CORPORATION. Jan. 28, 1963 [Jan. 29, 1962], No. 3378/63. Heading F2Q. [Also in Division G3] In a watch wherein a mainspring which drives a barrel wheel 13 is wound through barrel arbor 1 both by automatic and manual winding means, the winding is effected through a common planetary gear train comprising a centre wheel 4 connected with the automatic winding means 11 and in mesh with a plurality of planet gears 5 which are carried on a plate 2 fast with the barrel arbor 1, the planet gears 5 being in mesh with a ring gear 7 which is rotatable in one direction by the manual winding means 56, rotation of the ring gear 7 in the opposite direction being prevented by a known click 8. The automatic winding means comprises an oscillatory mass 14 fast through a plate 16 with a heart-shaped cam 17 rotatable on a pivot 15. This cam is engaged between arms 23, 24 of a lever 18 pivoted at 22 and carrying two spring- urged pawls 19, 28 engaging a ratchet wheel 29 fast with a centre spindle 3 which is rotatably housed in an axial bore of the barrel arbor 1, the other end of this spindle carrying the centre wheel 4 of the planetary train. External teeth 9 of the ring gear 7 are engaged by a drive wheel 10 of the manual winding means, this drive wheel being carried with an intermediate wheel 38 and an idler 42 on a bracket 41 pivoted at 39 and spring-urged in the direction engaging wheel 10 with the ring gear 7. Withdrawal of a manual winding knob 33, through a lever 47 withdraws the wheel 10 from engagement. Manual winding rotates ring gear 7 anti-clockwise in Fig. 1 to turn the barrel arbor in the same direction, the centre wheel 4 being held by ratchet wheel 29. Rotation of the ratchet wheel by the automatic winding means also winds the barrel arbor anticlockwise through centre wheel 4, the ring gear 7 being held against clockwise rotation in this case by the click 8 which pivots to engage the teeth 9 of the wheel. An annular locating and guide ring 12 fits round the wheel 9.
