Abstract

1,226,453. Universal timepieces. BULOVA WATCH CO. Inc. Oct. 29, 1968 [Nov. 14, 1967], No.51317/68. Heading G3T. A timepiece comprises a minute hand shaft 30 coupled to an hour hand LT by a differential gear system 26-29 to permit incremental movement of the hour hand in either direction by means of an intermittent motion device which moves the hand in 30 degree increments. A hand GT, which is rotated by the timepiece drive motor at one revolution in 24 hours, is set to Greenwich mean time on a fixed 24 hour dial 11 by rotating a crown A, the minute hand M also being set. The hand LT also moves, however its position is adjusted to indicate the correct local time by rotating a crown B. The rotation of the crown B advances or retards the hand LT by 30 degrees or one hour increments and is rotated a full turn each time a new time zone is entered. The adjustment of the hand LT does not affect the indication of the hands GT or M which continue to indicate correct Greenwich mean time. Before rotating the crown A it is pulled out to disengage the timepiece drive motor, which may be a tuning fork, from a cannon pinion 13 and to couple the crown to a minute wheel 16. Rotation of the crown A thus rotates the hand LT through a gear 17, a sun gear 26, planet gears 27 and a carrier 28, a ring gear 29 being fixed in position at this instant. The wheel 17 also rotates the hand GT via gears 21-24. To set the hand LT, which is rotated via the sun gear 26, &c. at one revolution in 12 hours, without altering the setting of the hand GT, the crown B is rotated to rotate a squared shaft 41 via a gear assembly 37, 38, 42. The gears 37, 38 are linked by slots and pins 37A, 38A; 37B, 38B. The shaft 41 rotates an index cam 39 of the intermittent motion device, the cam rotating a Geneva gear 32 via a pin and slot drive 39a, 32a. The gear 32 is rotated abruptly to index the ring gear 29 by a spring 40. The rotation of the ring provides a 30 degree movement of the hand LT via the planet gears 27 and the carrier 28.
