A heavy-medium separation apparatus corn-: prises a washbox 1 for containing the heavy! medium which has inlets 31 and 4<SP>1</SP> at either side' 4 for materials 3 and 4 to be separated, means; 2 for removing a heavy fraction from the bottom of the washbox and an outlet 6 for a, light fraction extending centrally across the washbox in a direction perpendicular to the inlet feeds 3 and 4. The means 2 is an inclined, rotating, lifting wheel. The light-fraction discharge-shoot 6 may be fed from weirs 5 and 5<SP>1</SP> on either side or each weir may discharge into a separate shoot (not shown). Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates an arrangement in which two washboxes are arranged on either side of a third washbox so that the lifting wheels associated with the outer washboxes feed the inlets of the central one. In this instance a liquid separating medium of lower specific gravity may be used in the two outer washboxes, so that washed coal is delivered to the shoots of the outer washboxes and a mixture of coal and shale is delivered to the middle washbox for rewashing.
