Abstract

1,055,278. Centrifugal separator filtering- and settling. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. Dec. 12, 1963 [Dec. 27, 1962], No. 49101/63. Headings B1D and B2P. Water and coal are separated from a coal slurry in a centrifuge 10 from which water containing fines is discharged at 48 and led to a flocculator 50, a mixture of water and of the flocculated fines being returned from the flocculator 50 to be filtered through a layer of separated coal in the centrifuge. The centrifuge has a screw conveyor drum 20 rotating at a different speed within a rotary drum 16 which is formed with a tapered portion 36 providing a beach supporting the layer of coal removed from the pool of separated water 38. The slurry is fed through conduits 26, 28 into a compartment 60 in the drum 20 and passes through orifices 30 into the larger diameter portion of the drum 16 where separation takes place. The water carrying the fines discharges through orifices 40 and is led to the flocculator 50 from which the mixture of water and flocculated fines is fed by a pump 52 and conduits 54, 56 into a compartment 62 in the drum 20 and discharges through orifices 64 onto the layer of separated coal on the beach 36. The water passes through the coal layer and along the beach to the pool 38. The filtered fines are fed along with the separated coal by the screw conveyor 24 along the beach and are discharged through an orifice 42 into a chute 44 leading to a pulverizer.
