Abstract
1,130,620. Gravity separator. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 9 Sept., 1966 [10 Sept., 1965], No. 40341/66. Heading BID. An apparatus for separating two immiscible liquids and possibly also solids therefrom comprises a plate assembly in which a number of corrugated or zig-zag plates 1 are interconnected in parallel in such a way that the liquids can flow between them and that the ridges 4 and valleys 5 of one and the same plate extend in a direction parallel to the direction in which the liquid will flow, the ridges and the valleys of the various plates being vertically situated above or below the respective ridges and valleys of the other plates, gutters 6 and 7 'being provided with notches 10 by which they are located with respect to the plates, the gutters 6 at one end interconnecting the ridges 4 and the gutters 7 at the other end interconnecting the valleys 5. The apparatus is used at an angle so that the lighter liquid separates and flows upwards under the troughs and up gutters 6 whilst the heavier liquid separates and flows down the valleys and down gutters 7.
