Abstract

1433171 Coalescing and settling particles PIELKENROOD-VINITEX BV 11 April 1973 [25 April 1972 12 Nov 1972] 17481/73 Heading BID A method of coalsecing particles in a suspension prior to settling the coalesced particles from the suspension (e.g. in a settling apparatus as described in Specification 1351801) comprises causing the suspension to flow along a path at least part of which is vertical and maintaining the average velocity of the suspension so that substantially all the particles are dragged along in the flow, the residence time in the path being such that as a consequence of differences in the flow velocity of the particles relative to each other coalescence of the particles is obtained and the flow velocity of the suspension at any point in the path being kept lower than the velocity at which the coalesced particles would be disrupted by shearing action as a consequence of the velocity gradients in the flow in the vicinity of that point. In Fig. 1 the coalescing device comprises a plurality of chambers 7 elongated in crosssection and connected in series, the flow crosssection of the chambers increasing in the direction of flow. The partitions 5. 6 may be inclined (Fig. 2, not shown). The device may comprise a plurality of concentric annular chambers defined by cylindrical or frustoconical partitions. The chambers may be subdivided by plates (e.g. planar, corrugated, perforated) extending transversely or parallel to the partitions. The plates may be pivotally mounted. The plates may be movable in the longitudinal direction, e.g. by means responsive to the pressure difference between successive chambers.
