Abstract

1,155,784. Electrostatic separators. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 18 July, 1966 [19 July, 1965], No. 32086/66. Heading B2J. Suspended water or aqueous solution, e.g. brine, is removed from a hydrocarbon liquid, e.g. a mineral or vegetable oil, by subjecting the liquid to an electric field of from 1 to 60 KV in the presence of particulate polyethylene, polypropylene or nylon as a coalescer material. In the apparatus shown, hydrocarbon liquid containing water is introduced into a vessel at 1. The water is coalesced by means of particulate polyethylenematerial 2 and an electric field is applied by an electrode arrangement 3. The coalesced water settles into a separator 4 and is removed by a valve 6 while the de-watered hydrocarbon liquid is removed at 5. In another form of apparatus, Fig. 2 (not shown), the coalescer material (2<SP>1</SP>) is arranged between a pair of concentric electrodes (3<SP>1</SP>). The rate of flow of the hydrocarbon liquid through the apparatus may be from 10 to 200 cm./min. More than one coalescing arrangement may be installed in the vessel.
