Abstract

1485017 Coalescing and settling particles PIELKENROOD-VINITEX BV 1 Nov 1974 [19 Nov 1973] 47315/74 Heading BID An apparatus for separating particles from a liquid suspension comprises a particle growth -promoting device comprising a duct formed by at least one tube, upstream of a settling device. In use, wall friction in the or each tube causes differences in the velocity of the particles in the suspension flowing through the or each tube so that coalescence of the particles occurs. The flow velocity of the suspension at any point in the or each tube is such that no separation of the particles takes place in the or each tube and is lower than the velocity at which coalesced particles would be disrupted by shearing action as a consequence of the velocity gradients in the vicinity of that point. As shown the growth-promoting device comprises tubes 1 of increasing diameter, interconnected by bends 2. The duct may comprise a rigid or flexible tube, a helically wound tube or a S-shaped tube. The tube may be corrugated. A slidable core (e.g. corrugated may be positioned in the duct. The core may comprise a stack of balls on a rod, alternate balls being of different diameter. The duct may comprise two sets of parallel tubes, the sets being in series and the second set comprising a greater number of tubes than the first set. The tubes of the sets may incorporate valves.
