Abstract
A metal base is protected by applying thereto a corrosion-resistant layer of uncured liquid adhesive synthetic resin, curing the layer, and applying a flame-sprayed metal layer thereover, followed by an impact-resistant flame-sprayed layer of at least one hard metal, e.g. tungsten or molybdenum, refractory metal carbide, fused metal oxide, or combination of silicon dioxide with at least one metal oxide. A powdered metal, e.g. aluminium or aluminium alloy, may be applied to the surface of the resin, which may be an epoxy resin, prior to curing, or it may be incorporated in the layer before application, the resin layer afterwards being treated to expose the particles. A final layer of synthetic resin, e.g. epoxy resin, may be applied over the impact-resistant layer. The metal base, e.g. an aluminium alloy blade, may be anodized or primed, e.g. chromate- or etch-primed, before coating. The protective layers are removable by a resin degrading material. Specification 745,257 is referred to.ALSO:A metal base is protected by applying thereto a corrosion-resistant layer of uncured liquid adhesive synthetic resin, curing the layer, and applying a flame-sprayed metal layer thereover, followed by an impact-resistant flame-sprayed layer of at least one hard metal, e.g. tungsten or molybdenum, refractory metal carbide, fused metal oxide or combination of silicon dioxide with at least one metal oxide. A powdered metal, e.g. aluminium or aluminium alloy, may be applied to the surface of the resin, which may be an epoxy resin, prior to curing, or it may be incorporated in the resin before application, the resin layer afterwards being treated to expose the particles. A final sealing coating of synthetic resin, e.g. epoxy resin, may be applied over the impact-resistant layer. The metal base, e.g. an aluminium alloy blade, may be anodized or primed, e.g. chromate- or etch-primed, before coating. The protective layers are removable by a resin-degrading material.
