Abstract

1404637 Coated carbon electrodes SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 16 Nov 1972 [16 Nov 1971] 52999/72 Headings C7B and C7F A carbon electrode, for use,particularly in the electrolytic production of aluminium, has surface parts which are not used for passage of current coated by spraying a material containing aluminium oxide, the coating material being applied as particles in a molten or plastic condition which solidify or harden on impingement on the electrode. The coating may have a thickness of 0.1-1.0 mm. A layer of aluminium metal 0.05- 1.0 mm thick may be applied under and/or over the coating, or a multiple coating of four layers, alternately aluminium and aluminium oxide may be used. Alternatively a single cement layer of the oxide and metal in a weight ratio of 10:1 to 2:1 may be applied. The coating prevents oxidation of those surfaces of the electrode in contact with the atmosphere.
