Abstract

A process for manufacturing glass-fibre reinforced polyvinyl chloride sheet material, suitable for roofing, comprises impregnating glass fibres with a paste comprising (a) polyvinyl chloride which is at least in part of paste grade, (b) a dialkyl fumarate and (c) an aromatic olefinic hydrocarbon or a chlorine substitution product thereof, forming the impregnated material into a sheet, converting the paste to a gel state by heating and curing to a rigid state. Dinonyl fumarate is the preferred fumarate and (c) may be styrene, vinyl toluene, xylene or naphthalene, di- or tri-vinyl- or isopropenylbenzene, a chloro-styrene or mixture of two or more thereof. Curing may be effected by means of ionising radiation, a free radical polymerization initiator having an effective temperature above the gelation temperature, or ultra-violet light in conjunction with a sensitizer. Specified initiators are dicumyl peroxide, t-butyl perbenzoate and the diphenyl-ethane compounds described in Specification 864,675. Specified U-V sensitizers are benzophenone, p-chlorobenzophenone, hexa-chlorobenzene chloro- and methyl-anthraquinones, xanthene and acenaphthene quinone. Optional ingredients incorporated in specific examples are dibutyl tin dilaurate and other organotin stabilizers, a proprietary dye-stuff and 2(21-hydroxy-5-methyl) phenyl-benzo-triazole. Detailed description of the processing of the material to corrugated roofing material is given (see Division B5). According to the Provisional Specification the dialkyl fumarate may be replaced by other unsaturated esters having a plasticizing action on polyvinyl chloride e.g. dialkyl sebacate or phthalate or triallyl citrate or cyanurate. Specification 856,884 also is referred to.
