Abstract

Graft polymers are made by heating a solution of a rubbery polymer of a conjugated diene having a trans-isomer content of at least 50% and cross-linked with a minor amount of a di-functional vinyl aromatic compound, in one or more monovinylidene monocyclic monovinylidene aromatic monomers, with or without acyclic vinyl monomer, until the rubber becomes insoluble in the monomer, simultaneously or successively adding to the resulting mixture a plurality of peroxy polymerisation catalysts which have substantially different decomposition temperatures, and gradually raising the temperature of the polymerising mixture so as to successively decompose the catalysts. The examples describe polymerising styrene and mixtures thereof with alphamethylstyrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of polybutadiene cross linked with divinyl benzene, the mixtures of peroxy catalysts used being: (a) tertiary butyl perbenzoate, cumene hydroperoxide and di-tertiary butyl peroxide; and (b) lauroyl peroxide, tertiary butyl peroxide and dicumyl peroxide. The graft polymers may be blended with polystyrene.
