Abstract
A high-impact strength plastic material comprises a binary blend of (A) a graft polymer of a styrene monomer upon a polybutadiene rubber and (B) a resinous styrene polymer, the graft polymer being made by polymerizing the styrene in a latex of polybutadiene which contains from 0 to 1.0% of divinyl benzene, has a gel content of at least 75% and has a swelling index greater than 11, the proportions of styrene monomer to polybutadiene being from 20 to 150 parts of the former to 100 parts of the latter, the intrinsic viscosity of (B) being at least 0.5 and the proportions of (A) and (B) being such that the blend contains 15 to 35% of polybutadiene. The styrene used for grafting upon the polybutadiene may be styrene itself or alpha-methyl styrene or a vinyl toluene or mixtures thereof; similarly, the resinous polymer may be derived from styrene alone or alphamethyl styrene or vinyl toluene or mixtures of two or more of such monomers. The graft polymerization of the styrene upon the polybutadiene is effected with the aid of emulsifiers, catalysts and mercaptan regulators of known types. The graft polymer and the resinous polymer may be blended together in the dry state or latices of the two polymers may be mixed and co-coagulated, but in either case the blend is subsequently mechanically-worked at a temperature high enough to plasticize the mass.
